Hydro Aluminium Metal is a leading supplier of extrusion ingots, sheet ingots, foundry alloys, wire rods and high-purity aluminum with a global production network of around 5,000 employees. With primary metal production facilities in Europe, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Qatar, and recycling facilities throughout Europe and in the U.S., two-thirds of our primary aluminum production is based on renewable energy.

The team and position

At Hydro, we are committed to advancing research and development, and we invite both experienced professionals and recent or soon-to-be graduates (Master’s or PhD in 2024) to join our dynamic team. As a Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist, you’ll collaborate closely with our operating plants and customers to develop innovative casthouse products and alloys.

You’ll be part of our highly skilled R&D team at Sunndalsøra, working on cutting-edge projects like Hydro CIRCAL & REDUXA, our low-carbon aluminium products. We offer opportunities to work internationally, providing valuable global experience as you help drive sustainable solutions for the future.

Areas of responsibility

As part of the Research and Development team you will be engaged in a variety of tasks. Examples of potential tasks are:

  • Project management: Planning, executing, and leading R&D projects.
  • Developing and testing optimized or new alloys and casthouse technologies.
  • Providing technical support and collaborating with customers on joint development projects.
  • Engaging in research collaborations with universities, institutes, and industrial partners.
  • Participating in research council-funded projects.
  • Presenting R&D results through reports, webinars, and presentations.

Your qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD – preferably within Metallurgy, Material Sciences, Nano Technology, Physics, Applied Mathematics or similar
  • Experience from project management, and from working with industrial processes and product development
  • Experience with aluminium is an advantage
  • Fluency in English

Additional information

Some travelling, both domestic and internationally, will be expected in this role.
