The average age of immigrant descendants is 13 years. No wonder, then, there are so few of them among Norwegian researchers, says Astri Syse of Statistics Norway (SSB). According to diversity statistics presented by NIFU and SSB earlier this year, immigrants accounted for no more than 0.5 per cent of researchers at Norwegian research institutions in 2018. ‘But it is impossible to know what will happen in the long term’, says Syse. ‘At least I think we have to be careful to claim that it’s discrimination.’
