In 2018, 29 per cent of researchers at Norwegian research and educational institutions had a foreign background. The majority, around 80 per cent, were so-called internationally mobile researchers with a higher education or doctorate from abroad. ‘How does this affect the relationship between research and society?’ asks Cathrine Egeland of the Work Research Institute at Oslomet. ‘We are facing major social challenges. Scientists from abroad must feel they are part of society, and not just hard-working minions in temporary positions.’
