According to Laura Maria Führer, the PhD programme she attended encourages the publication of articles. Just before summer, she submitted her doctoral thesis as a monograph, i.e., it was structured like a book, with inter-dependent chapters. The alternative is to write one’s thesis as journal articles that will hopefully be published on an ongoing basis, accompanied by a comprehensive summary. She does not believe that these two possibilities are presented as equal alternatives, one reason may be that publication points are hard to achieve without articles.
