Iranian Mahgol Afshari was initially elected to NTNU’s board as student representative, but was later informed that her Norwegian-language skills were not good enough, reports Khrono. According to NTNU’s election rules, board members’ Norwegian-language abilities must be ‘sufficient to attend to their duties’. The University of Oslo has no similar requirement. When deputy board member Elisabet García González, who speaks Spanish, took part in a board meeting in February, she listened via interpreter. She is now standing for election as representative for temporary staff for the period 2021–2025.
