More citations to fewer scientists

“Accomplished scientists receive more rewards than their research alone merits, and recent evidence indicates a widening gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ of science in terms of salary levels, research funding, and accumulation of scientific awards.” Two Danish researchers at Aarhus University, Mathias Wullum Nielsen and Jens Peter Andersen, have shown that the scientific elite secures an ever greater proportion of worldwide scientific citations – one percent of all researchers increased their share of citations from 14 per cent in 2000 to 21 per cent in 2015.
